Important Information!
Memorandum dated October 17, 2012 titled, “Voter Advocacy Groups at Polling Places on Election Day” is hereby withdrawn, effective immediately.

Based on actions taken by the Government Accountability Board during its meeting held Tuesday, October 23, 2012, the Board is hereby withdrawing the communication dated October 17, 2012, entitled “Voter Advocacy Groups at Polling Places on Election Day,” that was posted on our website on October 19, 2012.   Instead, in place of the October 17 memorandum, G.A.B. staff are providing the following replacement guidance on what is and is not permissible on Election Day and during in-person absentee voting:

  • Within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place, individuals that are not appointed by and are not under the supervision of the municipal clerk, are prohibited from interacting with voters to verify the voter’s registration status or polling location, or from directing voters to the proper lines for voting or registration.  Individuals are also prohibited from interfering with the flow of voters to and from the polling place within the 100 feet area.
  • Election inspectors continue to possess full authority to maintain order and enforce obedience with their lawful commands during the election within the voting area, i.e. 100 feet of the polling place.  Election inspectors have the right to summon law enforcement if individuals continue to act contrary to the inspector’s lawful commands.
  • Municipal clerks may continue to provide support to their appointed election inspectors with supplemental staff.  These staff persons must be appointed by the municipal clerk, trained in their duties, take an oath of office, and be supervised on Election Day by the clerk.

If you have questions regarding the above guidance, please contact the Government Accountability Board at (608) 261-2028 or via email our Help Desk at GABHelpDesk@wi.gov, or (608) 261-2028. Thank you.
